- POST- GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (PGDE)
The Programme is designed for graduate teachers who are not trained educationist and so deficient in professional training. It consists of courses in :
- Educational theory and practice;
- Special teaching methods for various subjects areas;
- Supervised practice in teaching skills and;
- Supervised individual projects
A Diploma is awarded to students who successfully complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work as outlined in the Description of Courses.
Entry Qualification:
The required entry qualification for the PGDE programme is a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University.
Types and Duration:
There are two types of programmes for the PGDE.
- The first is the full time programme which runs right through one academic session of two semesters.
- The second is a sandwich programme offered during two long vacations of 10 weeks duration each.
The courses offered at the Institute are supplemented by appropriate courses in Education consisting of Sociology, History and Philosophy, Guidance and Counselling, Curriculum Studies, General and Special Methods, Research and Statistics, Measurement and Evaluation, Educational Administration, and Supervision.
To qualify for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) a candidate must pass all the required courses and accumulate a minimum total of 30 credit hours. The pass mark for each course is 50%.
- PGDE candidates must pass the Practical Teaching exercise.
- PGDE candidate must pass the Research Project
- Any candidate who fails courses in the sessional examinations will be required to register and take the failed course(s) in the following academic session.
- PGDE may be awarded with distinction (70 percent and above weighted average). Below 50 percent is a failure. A student who has taken more than one year in excess of the approved minimum period of study for the programme to obtain his/her certificate is not eligible for distinction.
